Location: Hamilton, New Zealand

Employment type: Permanent, full-time

Pay rate: $33.00–$40.00 per hour, depending on experience and capability

Hours: Minimum 30 hours per week


D D Sharma Limited is a Waikato-owned transport and civil cartage company operating a fleet of heavy vehicles across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. We are looking for an experienced transport industry professional to join our team as a Transport Manager and oversee the day-to-day operation of our truck fleet.


This role would suit someone with substantial practical experience in the road transport industry who understands the operational demands of running heavy vehicles safely, efficiently and reliably.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities


The Transport Manager will be responsible for:


  • Planning and coordinating the daily use of company trucks and allocating vehicles and drivers to scheduled work.
  • Organising transport jobs to ensure deliveries and cartage work are completed efficiently and within required timeframes.
  • Liaising with drivers throughout the day regarding workloads, routes, delays, vehicle issues and changing operational requirements.
  • Monitoring the availability and condition of the fleet and coordinating servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Working with mechanics, service providers and suppliers to minimise vehicle downtime and ensure trucks are available when required.
  • Monitoring driver hours, logbooks and other operational records to support compliance with transport and workplace requirements.
  • Ensuring vehicles and transport activities are operated in accordance with company safety procedures and applicable road transport requirements.
  • Responding to breakdowns, accidents and other operational problems and coordinating appropriate action.
  • Liaising with customers, contractors and project staff regarding scheduling, delivery requirements and changes to planned work.
  • Monitoring fuel usage, maintenance requirements and other fleet operating costs.
  • Maintaining accurate records relating to vehicles, maintenance, drivers and transport operations.
  • Supporting drivers with operational issues and providing guidance on company procedures and safe working practices.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve fleet utilisation, efficiency and the reliability of transport operations.
  • Reporting to the Director regarding fleet performance, operational issues and upcoming requirements.


Skills and Experience


Applicants must have:


  • At least 3 years' relevant experience in the road transport, trucking or heavy vehicle industry.
  • A strong practical understanding of heavy vehicle operations.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple jobs, vehicles and drivers.
  • An understanding of road transport safety and compliance requirements.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with drivers, customers, contractors and suppliers.
  • The ability to respond calmly and practically to changing schedules, vehicle problems and other operational issues.
  • Good record-keeping and basic computer skills.


Experience with fleet scheduling, driver coordination, transport administration, vehicle maintenance planning or similar responsibilities would be an advantage.
