RWA People

Systems Engineer (Intermediate to Senior)

Kea Aerospace has partnered with RobLawMax Recruitment to appoint a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to its Christchurch-based team. Kea is developing the Kea Atmos, a solar-powered, remotely piloted stratospheric aircraft designed to remain airborne continuously for months at a time. Operating approximately 20 kilometres above the Earth, it will support maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, disaster management and other applications. The Kea Atmos will be the largest unmanned aircraft built in the Southern Hemisphere. This newly created role offers the opportunity to own critical aircraft electronics and see your designs progress from initial concept through to flight. The opportunity You will take ownership of electronics development from establishing requirements and system architecture through to detailed design, board bring-up, verification and flight-test support. Rather than receiving a fully developed specification, you will work with the wider aircraft team to determine what is needed, make sound technical trade-offs and deliver robust, working hardware. Depending on your particular area of expertise, your responsibilities will include:

Defining electronic system requirements, architecture and technical trade studies.

Leading the design and optimisation of power-conversion, distribution, monitoring and data-collection electronics.

Designing analogue circuits, schematics, magnetic components and PCB layouts.

Developing high-efficiency, lightweight electronic solutions suitable for an aircraft with limited available energy.

Modelling efficiency, mass, cost and performance to guide design decisions.

Building, testing and debugging prototypes, including investigating unexpected faults and unusual operating conditions.

Addressing EMI/EMC, thermal performance, packaging, reliability and manufacturability.

Supporting environmental qualification, aircraft integration and flight testing.

Producing clear technical reports that explain findings and inform design decisions.

Collaborating with design, test and manufacturing colleagues to deliver flight-ready hardware.

About you We are looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer with at least seven years’ hands-on experience and deep expertise in power electronics or a closely related electronics field. Power electronics is the preferred background. However, Kea is also open to experienced engineers from other domains, such as embedded hardware, where the overall technical fit is strong. You must be a confident communicator with strong spoken and written English. In particular, you will need to produce high-quality technical reports that clearly explain your findings and inform design choices. Depending on your background, your experience is likely to include several of the following:

DC-DC switch-mode power supplies, converter topology selection and analogue control.

Analogue circuit design, electromagnetics, magnetic-component design or discrete logic.

Embedded hardware and complex PCB design.

Defining system requirements rather than relying on an existing specification.

System-level power architecture, budgeting and technical trade studies.

Designing, building, testing and fault-finding printed circuit boards.

Modelling, simulation, validation and structured system verification.

Schematic-capture and PCB-layout software. Kea uses Altium, although experience with comparable packages is transferable.

Understanding how PCB layout affects EMI/EMC, thermal performance and manufacturability.

Taking electronic hardware from initial concept through to a tested working product.

You will also need to be comfortable working autonomously within a small, agile engineering team where no one will necessarily tell you exactly what needs to be built or how to build it. Relevant backgrounds Aerospace or spacecraft experience would be advantageous but is not essential. Relevant experience may come from electric vehicles, battery systems, electric propulsion, aviation, defence, drones or other high-reliability and harsh-environment electronic systems. The key is your ability to apply strong fundamental knowledge to the unusual conditions encountered at stratospheric altitude, including extreme cold, very thin air and an increased risk of electrical arcing. Additional experience Experience in any of the following would be useful but is not essential:

Lithium-ion battery systems or solar-array integration

Aerospace EMI/EMC standards and FMEA/FMECA

Environmental or qualification testing

Taking designs from prototype into production

Design for Manufacturability and Design for Testability

High-speed digital interfaces and structured engineering-change processes

Python or another high-level language for modelling, automation or testing

Mentoring engineers and contributing to wider technical development

Why Kea Aerospace?

Own critical aircraft electronics rather than one small part of an established product.

Work on technology unlike anything else being developed in this part of the world.

See your designs move rapidly from concept and bench testing to integration and flight.

Join a talented, mission-driven team where your decisions directly shape the aircraft.

Kea is interested in both New Zealand-based and international candidates. Applications should clearly state your current New Zealand work status or whether immigration support would be required. For security and safety reasons, police vetting will be undertaken before an offer of employment is made. For a confidential discussion, contact Peter Henderson on 027 441 9300 at RobLawMax Recruitment, or apply with your CV and a brief summary of electronic hardware you have personally taken from design through to testing.

RobLawMax Recruitment

Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Note: Partly is headquartered in Austin, TX with offices in London, UK, Christchurch, NZ and Auckland, NZ. Wherever you're based, we'll connect you with your nearest office for onboarding, and fly you to join the full team for our quarterly "Season Openers" (we cover travel and accommodation). If you're relocating to join us, we can also assist with relocation costs. 🚀 Our Story Partly is building the infrastructure for anyone to repair anything. We believe everything built should be repairable, and we're building frontier AI to put repair knowledge to work, starting with the $2tn automotive market. Our model, Interpreter, is the first AI purpose-built to understand repair. Trained on 1M+ car models and 1B+ parts, it reads a repair job the way an estimator does, resolves damage into the exact purchasable part, and shows its reasoning with a confidence score. On real production jobs, an estimator working with Interpreter reaches 98.8% parts-list accuracy, against 92.1% with today's tools. It powers PartlyRepair, used by collision shops, workshops and suppliers to take the admin off the job; PartlyLabs, the agentic infrastructure enterprises use to deploy Interpreter across their own workflows; and a developer API. Founded by ex-Rocket Lab engineers, we've raised a $50m Series B led by DST Global (Anthropic, Airbnb, Meta, TikTok, Spotify), with Blackbird Ventures, WNDR, Activant Capital, Icehouse Ventures, Square Peg, Airtree and Ecliptic Venture Capital. Hear it from the team: Why Partly exists and AI at Partly. 🖍️ This role As Partly’s Network Manager, NZ Supply and Solutions, you’ll be the hands-on operator behind our New Zealand supply network. You’ll be the single point of accountability for selection, live inventory, and supplier performance across the platform. Your mission: make sure repairers can find the part they need, see accurate availability, and trust the supplier on the other side. More than this, we want to maximise choice across supplier channels and cost. You’ll do that by getting deep in the data, building tight feedback loops with suppliers, and partnering with Product and Engineering to turn insight into action. This isn’t a back-office supply chain role, and it isn’t purely strategy. It’s a commercial, analytical and operational role for someone energised by the detail: running the numbers, pulling the levers, and being the person who knows the network better than anyone else in the building. 💻 What will you do Drive selection, availability and supplier performance

Own the day-to-day health of the supply network: selection breadth, live inventory accuracy, and fulfilment reliability.

Use Partly’s supplier performance features and data to identify where each supplier is under-performing, and build the playbook to address it.

Set the priorities: where to add coverage, where to expand integrations, where to push for better pricing and which suppliers to recruit.

Lead with data, hands-on

Live in the dashboards. Build new ones where they don’t exist.

Produce the insights that inform supplier conversations, internal trade-offs, and roadmap prioritisation, both internal (for leadership and Product) and external (for suppliers themselves).

Turn signals into action: spot a coverage gap, an availability dip, or a slipping supplier, and drive the response.

Be the supplier advocate

Synthesise supplier needs, pain points, and feedback into a clear point of view that lands internally.

Represent suppliers in product, engineering, and operational decisions, making sure their reality shapes what we build and how we operate.

Build trust through consistency: be the person suppliers know, call, and rely on.

Partner cross-functionally

Work closely with Sales (to prioritise new supplier acquisition), Solutions Engineering (to scope live inventory integrations), Customer Success (to drive supplier engagement on the Partly experience), and Account Management (for repairer-side signal).

Visit suppliers onsite when it matters. Real relationships still get built in workshops and yards.

Want to learn more about the problems we’re solving and the culture we’re building at Partly? Hear directly from our team here: https://shorturl.at/iAFUX 🥷 Your skills

Analytical and commercial: You think in numbers and trade-offs. You can build a model, defend a recommendation, and translate data into a commercial outcome.

Hands-on operator: Comfortable in the weeds. You pull the data yourself, write the SQL or the pivot, run the supplier review, and fix the issue. You don’t wait for someone else to produce the dashboard.

Strong communicator and influencer: You can sit with a supplier, a Product Manager, and a senior leader in the same week and earn credibility with each. Calm, clear, well-prepared.

Customer empathy, supply-side: You take the time to understand suppliers’ businesses (how they make money, what frustrates them, what they need from us) and translate that into clear internal advocacy.

Ownership mindset: Proactive, decisive, and comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You don’t wait to be told.

Tech-savvy: Fluent with the tools that move the work (BI/analytics, CRMs, integration concepts). You can hold a credible conversation with engineering when you need to.

Bonus: Exposure to marketplaces, supplier networks, automotive parts, or B2B SaaS where the supply side matters. Not required; sharp generalists welcome.

Please note: if you don't have all the skills/experience listed above but believe you could be outstanding in this role, please still consider applying. Many folks, especially those from underrepresented or marginalised groups, often count themselves out. Please allow us to learn more about you and why you're exceptional! 🎁 Benefits

Healthy, Catered Lunches - Enjoy fresh, healthy lunches every workday in our Auckland, Christchurch, London, and Austin offices. And if you ever go into a negative balance, that's fine too, we trust you to manage your own time off

We Celebrate Together - From weekly happy hours and monthly lunches to quarterly season openers and an annual global offsite, we make time to connect, celebrate, and have fun as one team.

Giving - We support charitable giving and will top up your donation by 33% for charities on the GiveWell list

Equity - You'll receive share options (ESOP) with a 4-year vesting schedule and a 1-year cliff, true ownership in Partly from day one.
