General manager jobs span industries from hospitality and retail to transport, property, and healthcare. Demand is steady across the country, with opportunities in both regional centres and major cities. These roles often involve leading multi-site operations, steering growth strategies, and building strong workplace cultures.

Day-to-day work

General managers oversee daily business operations, from setting budgets and managing financial performance to driving sales and customer experience. Career progression

Careers as general managers often grow from mid-level leadership roles such as operations manager, regional manager, or department head. Progression can lead to executive positions like chief operating officer, managing director, or board-level leadership. Some employers also encourage movement into specialist areas, such as commercial strategy or business development.

Skills employers look for

Employers value strong leadership and communication skills, alongside financial and commercial acumen.
